If I see one more poster that says "WORK HARD / STAY HUMBLE" I'm gonna launch myself off a v tall cliff!!!!!! Staying humble is easy for me because my baseline is below humble (shout out to all the other self-loathers out there). So when I'm struggling with my livelihood and I see the advice "just stay humble bro" I want to scream my whole body off.
Recognizing, accepting, and checking my privilege (straight, male, cis, white [I'm half Latino but don't look it and was raised by two white people so I still benefit from white privilege]) are daily actions that are very hard—they require humility, but are waaay harder than "staying humble." W.E.B. Du Bois basically said that the white person in America—who exists outside of the oppression that POC's face—is incapable of seeing reality until it is laid out for them by the oppressed. Now THAT is some heavy, hard, helpful stuff that has actually benefited my life. Fellow privileged homies—work hard and check your privilege! </lecture>
