These Are Magnets is my solo musical project that I focused on as the subject of my undergrad thesis in graphic design—follow? It's like this, I wrote and recorded an album under the name "These Are Magnets." For my thesis, I designed the following things to accompany that album. The overall concepts are tangibility and emotion. The former is achieved through a very tactile and hand-rendered aspect to all of the designs, and is displayed in a major way on the CD cover where all instruments pictured were constructed by myself out of cardboard, string, and tape. The latter concept is achieved by giving all of the pieces an aged, antiqued feel. Every piece is meant to create a dialogue with the viewer based on the objects contained on the CD and LP covers. Each item holds deep conceptual or emotional meaning for me personally, however the objects remain freely interpretable by all. Each individual piece of collateral (e.g. stickers, pins, business cards, shirts, posters, etc.) points directly back to the album cover through objects shared by each. This gives each piece the ability to survive on it's own while remaining a small part of a larger idea. You can view the project proposal here (pdf 44kb), or you can see the project in action at TheseAreMagnets.com. Enjoy.
