Outsiders is a TV drama about three clans living on Shay Mountain in Kentucky. The show is set in present day, but the clans have occupied the mountains for over 200 years. They have their own language, laws, religion, social structure, symbolism, etc. The challenge with this project was for me to get into the minds of these families and create art as if I was one of them.
First I created a runic-style alphabet that I used across every piece. I then did a lot of research on Northern UK (where the families are supposed to have migrated from) clan symbolism and traditional American secret societies. Based on the research, I decided to create a series of clan banners—one for each family. Each banner tells a piece of the history of the family that the banner represents.
The word "ged-gedyah" roughly translates to "hell yeah." The families say it all the time and it's a big part of their culture. I wanted to create a piece that you might see hanging in one of their cabins—a tribute to their culture and history.
Another big part of the culture on Shay Mountain is tattoos. Every family member gets their first tattoo when they're 16, and the keep on getting them. I picked four tattoos—one each from four different characters—and combined them to create a representation of the family they belong to. Then I brought them to life with ambient animation.
